There is a strong trend in behaviour away from traditional TV-formats towards virtual TV-channels and on demand content.
As usual development did not happen overnight. With the introduction of VCR:s, rental videos and more channels the options for viewers to choose have grown over the last 30 years.
The spread of broadband internet access is one of the more recent enablers of this development, primarily amongst younger viewers. Internet gives wide access to on demand media but usually the only mean to watch the programmes practically available is to sit in front of the computer. The link to the more relaxed context of the TV-screen is missing.
In 2006 the sales of flat screens exploded, many of them are HDReady and screen sizes installed in European homes have grown considerably since and are still growing. This means that households will have higher demands on the delivered technical quality and expectations to get HDTV.
TV-markets across Europe have grown accustomed to the concept of subscription pay-TV.
In Sweden, for instance, more than 70% of the TV-households are today subscribing to pay-TV content. On the other hand experiments with Pay-Per-View are so far less encouraging. VODvision believes that TV-viewers now are ready to accept the concept of Video on Demand and the business model of subscription VOD-services. For operators who want to provide consumers with more and more content virtual TV-channels becomes the solution to avoid the problems bandwidth capacity in prime time.
The push-TV solution provided by VODvision will harvest the change in behavioural patterns towards demand content, help operators to provide HDTV to the bigger flat screens now installed in European homes and give the means to adopt accepted pay models, such as subscription. Later on, when an installed base of consumer equipment is in place and the concept of VOD is ingrained, VODvision believes the next natural step to further grow operator's revenues is virtual TV channels.
VODvision platform is developed as a tool to support TV services of tomorrow.
The long bespoken technological trend "convergence" is now becoming a reality in the consumer environment. TV services are being delivered via traditional TV networks as well as via Internet/broadband connections, mobile networks and of course different kinds of storage media. Whilst conventional TV networks and unencrypted storage medias (such as DVD:s) have been connected to TV-screens since long, internet and broadband is just about to happen and encrypted stored content are on the way. With VODvision the operator can give the consumer access to pay-content from all these sources and provide smooth and easy payment solutions to customers together with secure content protection.
VODvision platform is designed for flexibility.
How fast a majority of the consumers will adopt new types of services and which service and pricing models that will become most successful are still unknown. Therefore VODcaster has been designed as an evolving platform.
